Full, sensuous lips should enhance a face and not overpower other aesthetic features. Lip augmentation should feel soft and supple given the important function of one’s lips in daily activities such as eating, kissing, talking, and expressing emotions (smiling and pouting).
Lip enhancement is a procedure that requires a conservative aesthetic eye that focuses on the shape, style, balance, and harmony between both the upper and lower lips, and how the lips fit a particular face. At CARE Plastic Surgery our surgeon pays special attention to facial expressions and how the lips complement those expressions. Considerations for lip augmentation are age, facial shape, ethnicity, gender, and of course your personal aesthetic desires and wishes.
Lip Augmentation can be performed as an injection of filler in the office or with fat grafting in the operating room. The type of lip filler for injection varies but has the advantage of an immediate result with no downtime. Like all fillers, the result only lasts a few months and must be repeated. Fat grafting is a more permanent solution to lip augmentation but requires a trip to the OR, has considerable swelling for a week or two and some of the transferred fat may disappear, requiring further fat grafting. Many patients try fillers first and if they like the look, consider fat grafting for a more long-lasting result. Lip augmentation with fat grafting is often incorporated with other facial cosmetic procedures like eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, facelift, or other facial fat grafting procedures.
How long do lip injections last?
At CARE, we offer top-of-the-line Juvederm fillers. Our most common lip fillers can last anywhere from 9 months to one year. However, patients who prefer a fuller look may opt to receive additional treatment prior to the 1 year mark. We encourage our patients to consult with our nurse injectors to help determine which lip filler will best achieve your desired goals.
Are lip injections temporary?
Yes, lip injections are temporary. However, lip fillers, including Juvederm Ultra and Volbella, last about 12 months. Oftentimes, patients are ready for additional filler a few months before that to “top off” the original added volume.
How much lip filler do I need?
We encourage our patients to consult with our injectors for a comprehensive clinical assessment. After listening to your desired aesthetic goals, they will develop a customized treatment plan for best results.
Are lip injections worth it?
While ultimately this question is best answered by the patient, we have found our patients experience the utmost satisfaction with their lip injections – they sometimes wind up wanting even more! For many of our patients, this is something they have considered for a while and it is exciting for them to achieve their aesthetic goals.
Are lip injections painful?
To create a more comfortable experience, your provider may recommend different methods to numb the treatment areas beforehand, including topical anesthetic and/or cool compresses. In addition, the fillers are comprised of hyaluronic acid, which works to add volume, and lidocaine, which numbs the area as the injection takes place.
What do lip injections cost?
Pricing will vary depending on the specific type of product used and how many syringes are recommended by your provider.
Is there swelling with lip fillers?
One of the most common side effects associated with lip fillers is immediate post-treatment swelling. This swelling peaks around 1-3 days after being injected, and it will continue to subside gradually. We often recommend patients use ice or cool compresses after treatment for added comfort.
Can I get lip filler in one lip?
If a patient is a candidate, he/she may only need filler in one lip to provide better balance. While it is more common to inject filler in both the upper and lower lip, each patient is unique in their aesthetic goals and anatomy. Ultimately, it will depend on a comprehensive clinical assessment by your injector.
Will my lips bruise after lip injections?
Bruising can be a common side effect after lip injections. Our injectors have been trained under our renowned double board-certified plastic surgeon, and they utilize the best techniques to minimize any pain, bruising, and bleeding. Furthermore, there are measures patients can take to reduce chances of bruising, including avoiding NSAIDs or other blood-thinning agents about 1-2 weeks before injections. Additionally, we recommend avoiding red wine about 48 hours prior to your treatment to minimize the risk of bruising.
Are lip injections safe?
Lip injections are safe, but there are measures you can take to increase the overall safety. We recommend selecting a trained and well-qualified injector to perform your treatment. At CARE Plastic Surgery, our injectors have been trained under our double-board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Coan, to utilize all safety protocols while injecting. We also recommend using optimal products, and we consider Juvederm fillers to be the “gold standard” of fillers.
