What is Sculptra?
Sculptra is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that gradually restores facial volume and improves skin quality by stimulating your body’s natural collagen production. Unlike traditional dermal fillers that provide immediate volume, Sculptra works beneath the skin’s surface to encourage long-term collagen growth for results that appear gradually and last.
Its active ingredient, poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), is a safe, biodegradable polymer that has been used in medical applications for decades. By rebuilding the skin’s underlying structure, Sculptra helps improve facial fat loss, soften wrinkles, lift sagging skin, and address other visible signs of aging with natural-looking results.
As a collagen biostimulator, Sculptra offers a non-surgical way to rejuvenate your appearance and restore youthful contours. At CARE Plastic Surgery, Dr. Brian Coan and his team provide expert Sculptra treatments designed to enhance skin elasticity, smooth fine lines, and revitalize your overall look for long-lasting radiance.
Treatment Areas
Sculptra is a versatile treatment for both the face and select body areas, including:
- Cheeks and midface
- Jawline contour
- Temples
- Nasolabial folds (smile lines)
- Marionette lines
- Body areas
By stimulating collagen, Sculptra helps strengthen the skin’s foundation, gradually leading to natural-looking results and a more youthful appearance.
Am I a Candidate?
Sculptra is well-suited for healthy adults looking to address sagging skin, wrinkles, or facial volume loss. It’s especially helpful for those experiencing facial lipoatrophy or hollowed cheeks due to aging or rapid weight loss.
Ideal candidates should have adequate skin thickness, should not be pregnant or breastfeeding, and should be free of any active skin infections at the injection site.
If you take aspirin, over-the-counter blood thinners, or certain supplements, let your provider know in advance, as these can increase the likelihood of temporary bruising or swelling after injections.
A consultation with Dr. Brian Coan at CARE Plastic Surgery will help determine whether Sculptra is the right treatment to achieve your goals.
How is Sculptra performed?
Sculptra treatments are performed in-office and typically take less than an hour. During the procedure, your provider carefully injects the product into targeted areas of the skin where the poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) microparticles begin stimulating collagen production.
While you may notice some initial fullness right after the injections, the most noticeable improvements appear gradually over the following weeks as your body produces new collagen. For optimal, natural-looking results, most patients benefit from a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart to achieve their desired correction.
Post-Treatment Care
After Sculptra treatment, you may experience mild swelling, redness, bruising, or tenderness at the injection site. These side effects are generally mild and resolve within a few days. To ensure even distribution of the product, patients are often advised to gently massage the treated area several times a day for the first few days after treatment.
You may also be asked to avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, or certain medications for a short time to minimize swelling or bruising. Visible improvements appear gradually as collagen continues to develop, leading to a firmer, smoother, and more youthful appearance.
