Juvéderm® Voluma

Voluma can result in temporary bruising and/or swelling that can last a few days or weeks after the initial injection. We encourage our patients to return for a follow-up appointment about 6-8 weeks after injection to accurately evaluate their final result. This also allows sufficient time for the product to be fully incorporated into your tissues and settle.

On the day of your injection, avoid strenuous exercise, massages, microdermabrasion, or anything else that may elevate your blood pressure or possibly manipulate the injection sites. This could displace the filler into unwanted areas. You can apply cosmetics, moisturizer, or lotion, but we recommend avoiding anything that will cause pressure and/or discomfort. You may use cool compresses for comfort and to reduce swelling.

While Voluma does not expand after injection, there can be subsequent swelling post-injection. This swelling can last a few days or weeks after the initial injection. There are several measures we recommend patients take to minimize swelling, including avoiding blood-thinning agents such as aspirin, fish oil, and vitamin E prior to your treatment. Rather than expand, Voluma will incorporate into the surrounding tissues and settle over time.

Juvederm fillers, including Voluma, take approximately 6-8 weeks to fully settle and incorporate into the tissues. By this time, the injected filler tends to have a more natural appearance and overall aesthetic.

Voluma is comprised of hyaluronic acid, which our bodies naturally produce. Over time, hyaluronic acid breaks down in the body, and as we age, it breaks down at a faster rate than the rate that it is produced. Voluma is a long-lasting product and a worthwhile investment, and patients can expect it to last up to 24 months. However, it is important to note that the product duration is both patient and dose dependent. Many patients maintain their results by returning for touch-up treatments.

While Voluma itself does not stimulate collagen, the injection itself stimulates collagen in the surrounding tissues. Voluma is comprised of hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring product that our bodies produce.

Immediately after injection, bruising is one of the most common side effects and can be easily covered with makeup within a few days. Bruising normally resolves completely within a couple of weeks. Patients may also notice the product may be palpable and firm for up to two weeks after injection.

The benefit of dermal fillers is that they have immediate results, meaning you will see a noticeable difference immediately after your injection. Your injector will take photos after to note the changes and improvements made during your treatment. However, we encourage patients to return in-office 6-8 weeks later for final photos after your filler has settled.
