Breast implants are low maintenance but at some point, you may need to replace your implants. How do you know when you need an implant exchange? You’re always welcome to meet with us, and we can help you decide if it’s time to swap out your implants. We’ve also put together some general guidelines, to help you determine if the timing is right. Call us with any questions or to schedule a consultation.

Reasons to Replace Breast Implants

If you love your implants and aren’t having any problems, leave them be. You don’t need to replace your implants on a set timeline. If they are working for you, keep them. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t ever need to change your implants. There are many good reasons to consider an implant exchange including:

  • Desire to change breast size or shape
  • Capsular contracture
  • Leak or rupture
  • Want to swap implant types (saline for silicone, upgrade to gummy bear implants, etc.)
  • Breast shape changes after pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Implant rippling
  • Implant displacement

If you’re unhappy with your breasts or are ready for a change, come see us. We can talk about your concerns and work together to decide if implant exchange is your best option.

What Happens During a Breast Implant Exchange?

Implant exchange is a very common procedure. It is customized to your needs. If you’re replacing your implants due to capsular contracture, we may need to remove the old implants and perform a capsulectomy (removal of the old capsule) to prepare the breast for the new implant. If you have sagging tissue, we may pair your implant exchange with a breast lift. Implants come in many shapes and sizes and we have a lot of flexibility in how we place the implants (over the muscle, under the muscle, etc.), allowing us to achieve your best results.

Implant removal and replacement are typically performed during a single operation. We’ll open up the breast, remove the old implant, prepare the breast, and finally, place a new implant. Most patients return home the same day to recover. We can discuss your specifics during your consultation.
