How Pregnancy Changes the Breasts

Hormonal changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding cause the breasts to swell and increase in size, sometimes growing several cup sizes. After you’ve finished breastfeeding, the breasts may return to their normal size, but often they are smaller. If you have gained significant weight during pregnancy your breasts may stay larger.

Regardless of which group you end up in, one thing is true for all groups – stretching of the skin. This extra skin does not completely disappear as the breasts settle at their new size and this leads to breast sagging.

Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, or Both?

If you’ve experienced volume loss due to pregnancy and breastfeeding, breast augmentation is the solution. During the procedure, implants are placed underneath the breasts, adding fullness and improving breast shape. With a variety of implant shapes and sizes, we can customize the look of your breasts and achieve your ideal shape. Breast augmentation can increase your natural breast size, restore volume loss after pregnancy, correct asymmetry, and more.

Breast augmentation increases volume loss but doesn’t correct the extra skin that causes the breasts to sag. If you have breast ptosis (sagging), you may need a breast lift. Excess skin is removed, and the breast tissues are repositioned to restore a perky, youthful breast appearance. A breast lift doesn’t increase breast size; it only reshapes the breasts. Incision placement varies depending on the severity of the sagging.

Breast lift surgery and breast augmentation are often paired together to address both the volume and the extra skin problems. If you want to increase your size, but don’t have sagging, you are a candidate for breast augmentation. If you want to reshape and lift your breasts and are happy with your current size, you are a good candidate for a breast lift. If you want to correct sagging and increase size, you may need both.

How Will Future Pregnancies Impact My Breasts?

Once you have your shape and size back, your breasts will age normally. Should you get pregnant again, your breasts will change again, and repeat surgeries may be needed to undo those changes.

If you are actively trying to get pregnant, it is recommended that you wait until after you’ve finished having children to have your breasts done.

If you are not sure or will be having more children down the road, surgery now will not prevent you from getting pregnant nor will it prevent changes to the breasts that pregnancy can cause.

If you’re concerned about breastfeeding and breast surgery, make sure to talk to your surgeon during your consultation.

Once you are done with childbearing, your breast rejuvenation surgery can be part of a mommy makeover.

If you’ve experienced breast changes after pregnancy, come see us at CARE Plastic Surgery. A post-baby breast augmentation and/or lift can help you to feel confident and sexy again. Call us today and schedule your consultation.
