My First Microneedling Treatment

A Day in the Life Receiving a Microneedling Treatment 

The word “microneedling” can sound a little intimidating at first, but the procedure behind it is one that can be very beneficial for your skin! Today, I received my first microneedling treatment at CARE. I did not have a lot of prior knowledge regarding this procedure, until an aesthetician at CARE mentioned it to me during my DiamondGlow facial. I was receiving a DiamondGlow infused with the pore-clarifying serum for my acne-prone skin, when it was suggested to me my skin could be positively impacted by Microneedling with PRP.  

What exactly is microneedling with PRP? 

Microneedling is a procedure that uses very thin needles to jumpstart collagen and elastin production. It can help to aid acne-scarring, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, and pore size. The thin needles create controlled injury on the face which boosts skin rejuvenation. It can improve overall texture, tone, and youthfulness of the skin. The patient’s platelet rich plasma, or PRP, is applied to amplify the skin’s natural healing process due to the growth factors it releases.  

What my microneedling treatment looked like: 

BEFORE 

When I checked into my appointment, the very first thing I needed to do was wash my face. Even though I came into the office with no makeup on, I still needed to remove any sunscreen or moisturizer. This is to ensure that the numbing cream is the only product on your skin once it is applied. Next, they spread a thin layer of numbing cream all over my face. There is a slight tingling sensation once this is applied, but it goes away after a few minutes. While the numbing cream was starting to work, my PRP was prepared. This was as simple as drawing a small amount of blood. The medical assistants at CARE did an excellent job of making it quick and painless. Once they had the PRP, it was time for microneedling! 

DURING 

The procedure began with the aesthetician cleansing my face after the numbing cream was removed. This left my skin clean and ready to be treated. At CARE, the SkinPen is used because it is the leading microneedling device and is the first FDA-cleared device. It is also wireless, which made it very easy for her to reach all areas of my face. She began on my forehead, since that is the area of your skin that is the thinnest. In case the numbing cream began to wear off, it was best to get the most sensitive area completed first. She then treated the sides of my face, followed by my cheeks, under eyes, nose, and chin. Some areas were a little more tender than others, but overall, the process was very comfortable! 

AFTER 

After the treatment, it is important to follow the skincare regimen recommended to you by your aesthetician to ensure that you have as minimal downtime as possible. Even though the PRP works to amplify the skin aiding process, it is best optimized when used in combination with the products used post-procedure. Immediately after the treatment was over, a biocellulose mask is put on your face to help cool it down. There is a warm sensation that your skin will begin to experience, due to the fact it was just pricked by tiny needles repeatedly. The mask helps to aid in the redness and heat. Your aesthetician will also provide you with a patient dependent post procedure step-by-step process to make sure you are on track to healing your skin. The amount of time your skin is red depends on your skin sensitivity, but it is typical to expect a few days of redness. I am now 2 days post procedure, and the redness is very minimal! For my skin type, about 3 treatments of microneedling with PRP was recommended to see optimal results, but after just 1 initial treatment, I am already impressed with the look and feel of my skin!
