What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Patient getting CoolPeel Care Plastic Surgery

Laser skin resurfacing at CARE Plastic Surgery uses the Tetra CO2 CoolPeel, a customizable laser system designed to treat a wide range of skin concerns. Skin resurfacing is just what it sounds like. Damaged skin cells on the surface of the skin will be removed using energy pulses from the Tetra CO2 CoolPeel laser. Underlying layers of healthier skin will then be uncovered (or resurfaced) to reveal healthy, glowing skin and a more youthful appearance.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Anyone who wants to improve their skin quality and rejuvenate their appearance is a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing. The Tetra CO2 CoolPeel can treat irregular pigmentation such as brown or red spots, sunspots and sun damage, and acne scars. The laser also has an anti-aging effect and will reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Results and Recovery

People react slightly differently to laser skin resurfacing but oftentimes, your skin will feel like it is mildly sunburned after treatment and may have a minor stinging or itchy sensation. Some people experience more severe skin redness and inflammation than others and their skin may blister. For the best recovery, and to relieve any painful side effects you might have, follow these steps after treatment:

  • Use an ice pack during the first two days to minimize swelling
  • Clean the treated area 2-5 times per day with saline or diluted vinegar solution
  • Use sunscreen designed for sensitive skin every day
  • Use plenty of moisturizer on the treated area daily
  • Apply protective skin treatments as instructed by your doctor and follow all their recommendations

Following these steps will help your new skin grow healthy and give you optimal results. The first week is usually the most uncomfortable, but once the skin has stopped peeling, a new layer of bright, healthy skin will be revealed. Your skin will still be red for several weeks, but after 2-3 months it will lighten to a pink hue. It can take up to a year for this pinkness to completely fade so it is important to continue with your recommended skincare routine and protect your healing skin during this entire period.
