Rhinoplasty is a procedure that sculpts the nose, changing its shape and/or size. It can be performed to meet cosmetic goals or for reconstructive purposes such as after trauma or with breathing problems. Small changes in the nose can often have a significant, noticeable impact on your overall appearance. Therefore, Dr. Coan will work closely with you to learn how you would like your nose to look, to evaluate the structure of your nose and face, and to explain the factors that can influence the procedure and the results.
There are two basic approaches for rhinoplasty - closed and open. The closed technique involves placing all the incisions inside the nose. The open approach includes incisions inside the nose as well as a small incision between the nostrils. This external incision usually heals inconspicuously. The open approach allows for more predictability, flexibility and surgical precision. It is recommended when several significant changes need to be made.
This surgery is frequently combined with the placement of a chin implant or neck contouring to create facial harmony. The procedure may also be combined with surgery to address functional breathing problems such as those related to a deviated nasal septum.
