Breast Reduction Durham
Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty, is a reconstructive procedure designed to reduce the size of the breasts and create a healthier breast shape and form. Large breasts can cause a pain of the breasts, back, shoulder, and neck. Some patients may experience problems with posture including shoulder grooves from bra straps or skin discomfort. The goal of the procedure is to first listen to your concerns and determine the optimal course for the procedure to achieve your health goals. To discuss breast reduction call (919) 484-4884 and schedule a consultation with award-winning Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, Dr. Brian Coan today.
How is Breast Reduction performed?
Breast reduction surgery removes excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue, resulting in smaller, lighter and firmer breasts that are better-shaped in proportion to the rest of the body. Predefined incisions are made on the breast, and excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue are removed. The nipple is then elevated to its new position on the breast mound, and the remaining tissues are closed around it. Some liposuction of adjacent areas may be performed at the same time to improve the shape of the new breast.
Most major insurance plans cover the breast reduction procedure when there is documented health history of back and neck pain along with attempts at pain medication, chiropractic, or massage therapy services. Our highly trained staff is happy to assist you with organizing the paperwork needed for your insurance company. Please contact us by calling 919.484.4884 if you have further questions.

At CARE Plastic Surgery we encourage our patients to be well-informed of options surrounding breast augmentation surgery and we strongly encourage you to view the FDA website on breast implants. The FDA provides numerous helpful resources on both silicone gel-filled and saline-filled breast implants for the breast augment procedure. The following resources include:
- An internet resource on breast implants at their website: www.fda.gov/breastimplants
- An informative brochure, “Breast Implants: Local Complications and Adverse Outcomes”, which outlines the most common problems that occur with breast implants, as well as issues to consider if you are thinking about having breast augmentation surgery with implants.
- A list of questions to review with your surgeon before a surgical breast augmentation procedure with implants: questions to ask your surgeon.
- Two videos (one for women and one for health care providers) on a small but increased risk of a rare type of cancer called anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) in women with breast implants.
