Breast Reconstruction
The term breast reconstruction is actually used to describe successive plastic surgery procedures where the goal is to restore a breast to near normal size, shape and appearance after a mastectomy. The procedure can be done immediately following the mastectomy (while the patient is still under general anesthesia), or it can be done in a delayed or secondary fashion. Each patient is different and the decision to proceed with immediate or secondary breast reconstruction may be influenced by the the condition of the patient. It is important to note that excellent results may be obtained with both immediate and secondary breast reconstructions. For more information on the procedure, or to schedule a consultation with Dr. Brian S. Coan, call (919) 484.4884 and it will be our pleasure to schedule you for a consultation.
Many women find the creation of a new breast markedly improves self-image, confidence and overall quality of life. And while surgery can give a patient a relatively natural-looking breast, a reconstructed breast will never look or feel exactly as the removed breast.
Breast reconstruction is tailored to each individual and a possible option for patients who:
- Are able to deal well with diagnosis and treatment
- Do not have additional medical conditions or other illnesses
- Have realistic goals for restoring the breast
Breast reconstruction generally involves successive procedures performed in varying stages and can either:
- Start at the same time as mastectomy, or
- Be performed after the patient heals from mastectomy and recovers from additional cancer treatments
