Liposuction Durham

Liposuction, Smartlipo, and Tumescent Liposuction

What is Liposuction?  Why Should I have Liposuction with a Plastic Surgeon?

Liposuction, also called lipoplasty or suction assisted lipectomy, removes deposits of excess fat from specific areas of your body. For example, the liposuction procedure when performed by a plastic surgeon can slim your hips and thighs, flatten your abdomen, reshape your waist, or eliminate a double chin.  When you schedule your consultation with Durham Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Brian Coan, he will first perform a full health history to determine if you are a candidate for this procedure.  For more information call CARE Plastic Surgery in Durham at (919) 484-4884.

Liposuction is particularly well suited for men and women who have relatively normal and stable weight, but isolated areas of fat that cause their body to appear disproportionate.

Who is a candidate for Liposuction or Smartlipo at CARE Plastic Surgery?

The ideal candidate for liposuction has localized areas of excessive fat and otherwise normal body weight and good skin elasticity, and  is also free of any complications or preexisting medical conditions, including heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, skin/connective tissue disorders, etc.  Liposuction is not successful in treating generalized obesity. Patients who are generally overweight, but who exhibit unsightly bulges of fat, are also candidates for treatment of these areas.  Localized fat deposits may sometimes be an inherited trait and typically do not respond to diet and exercise and liposuction is often the only way to eliminate them.

Because liposuction does not reduce the amount of skin or address muscle tightening, optimal results are often obtained in those patients with good skin elasticity as the skin readily contracts to the newly contoured frame.  Pleasing and satisfactory results can also be obtained in older patients with somewhat less skin elasticity.  To determine if your skin elasticity is appropriate for liposuction, you should consider a trained Plastic Surgeon.  Those patients with more skin laxity, or poor elasticity may benefit from or require removal of the excess skin to achieve intended results, as would be the case in an abdomen with hanging loose skin.  It will be important to discuss your skin tone and laxity at your liposuction consultation with Dr. Coan at CARE.  Call (919) 484-4884 for answers to your liposuction questions.

In Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill liposuction is now nearly as common for men as for women. The areas commonly treated are:

  • Abdomen
  • Calves and Ankles
  • Hips and Waist
  • Chest – Male and Female
  • Flanks and Back
  • Upper Arms
  • Inner, Outer, Anterior Thighs
  • Under the Chin/Double Chin Area
  • Buttocks
  • Face
  • Knees

How is Liposuction Performed by a Plastic Surgeon?

Through a tiny incision, a narrow tube or cannula is inserted and used to vacuum the fat layer that lies deep beneath the skin. The cannula is pushed then pulled through the fat layer and breaks up the fat cells and suctions them out.

Who does Liposuction?  Should I Ask a Plastic Surgeon to do My Liposuction?

By far one of the most common aesthetic procedures performed, liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fat (and pockets of fat from target areas of your body).  A Plastic Surgeon is uniquely and specially trained in the liposuction surgical procedure and has a thorough understanding of the physiology of your body.  Because it seems a simple concept to remove fat, it is unfortunately an area that is open for marketing tactics that overplay its simplicity and long-term surgical results. Because the body needs precise layers of fat underneath the skin and there is far less control than most aesthetic procedures, this is perhaps where you want to work with a plastic surgeon who understands of the procedure and who is skilled and trained in performing the surgical procedure. If too much fat removed with liposuction then the patient will be left with sagging skin.  When fat is removed from the main area without attention to surrounding areas, the patient may be left with unevenness. Fat removed from superficial areas can leave dimpling that is a challenge to correct. For questions about liposuction and skin elasticity call CARE at (919) 484-4884.

Is it Possible to Have a Breast Augmentation at the Same Time as Liposuction?

Liposuction can frequently be done safely in combination with other cosmetic plastic surgery procedures such as rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, the mommy makeover, and brachiplasty (arm lift) and others.  It is recommended to first seek advice and recommendations in person from a plastic surgeon that is trained, experienced and knowledgeable in all fields of cosmetic surgery and understands the physiological implications on the body.  A Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon will perform a full health history before embarking on any surgical procedure.
