Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) in Durham, Chapel Hill and Raleigh
Sometimes a healthy diet and regular exercise just aren’t enough to achieve a slimmer waistline and taut skin in the abdomen or stomach area. If you are in good physical condition but are still troubled by loose muscles, stretch marks, and extra skin or even stretch marks in your abdominal area, you may be a candidate for abdominoplasty, also called a “tummy tuck.” A tummy tuck in Durham flattens and contours the tummy by tightening the abdominal muscles, and removing excess skin and fat from the lower and middle abdomen. Dr. Coan offers abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) procedures designed to improve natural proportions for men or women, while minimizing the recovery period. The Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) procedure often achieves dramatic results for patients with fat and lipid deposits in their abdominal areas. The procedure is also good for people who have lost significant amounts of weight or after childbirth.
Known commonly as the "tummy tuck," abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen. The procedure also helps to flatten the abdomen by tightening the surrounding muscles. If you are in relatively good shape but are concerned by fatty deposits or loose abdominal skin that won’t respond to diet or exercise, this procedure can dramatically reduce or even eliminate a protruding abdomen (sometimes referred to as a "pot belly" in the area). Abdominoplasty can be particularly helpful to women with stretched abdominal areas (stomach areas) due to previous pregnancies or weight loss. Older individuals whose skin has lost some of its elasticity and are slightly obese may also benefit from a tummy tuck. Call CARE Plastic Surgery at (919) 484-4884 and we will be happy to discuss the procedure. Please plan at least a full hour for your first appointment as Dr. Coan will perform a full health history.

How is the Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) Procedure Performed?
While the patient is under anesthesia, Dr. Coan makes an incision from hip to hip above the pubic area. Note that a smaller incision is made for a partial, or mini, abdominoplasty, which addresses smaller deposits of fat localized below the navel. Excess fat and tissue are carefully trimmed away from the middle and lower abdominal areas so that a more proportioned figure can emerge. Finally, Dr. Coan draws the abdominal muscles together, tightening them to create a toned and athletic appearance. Dr. Coan then closes the incision. It is often necessary to place a temporary drainage tube beneath the skin to ease the recovery process. The surgery can produce a permanent scar, although the scar will likely be located below the bikini or bathing suit line and will fade over time.
How is the Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) Recovery?
Dr. Coan will provide the patient with a prescription for pain medication to use during the first few days, when he or she will feel the most sore and swollen. Patients are often encouraged to begin walking as soon as possible after the abdominoplasty surgery to speed healing.
